Surface Disinfection

  • Practice Statement:  Clean surfaces with detergent solution at least once daily or when visibly soiled.
  • Recommendation:  Decontaminate site wearing gloves and PPE after spills of blood or other potentially infectious material.
  • Recommendation:  Use Sodium Hypochlorite solution for disinfection as an adjunct to standard cleaning.

Gloves, Gowns & Masks

  • Recommendation:  Sterile gloves should be used for aseptic procedures and sterile sites.
  • Recommendation:  Don gloves on entering patient-care area following hand hygiene.
  • Recommendation:  If performing multiple tasks while in patient-care area, remove gloves, perform hand hygiene and don clean gloves.
  • Recommendation:  Ensure that skin or clothing do not touch potentially contaminated environmental surfaces.
  • Recommendation:  A surgical mask should be worn when entering a patient-care environment.
